Database DevOps

25th September 2017 - 27th September 2017

Who is it for?

This course is aimed at anyone responsible for SQL Server schema changes.

DevOps is about bringing dev and ops folk closer together, so whether you are a developer, a DBA or anyone else who plays a role in writing, testing or deploying SQL changes, this course will teach you how to deliver more frequently and more reliably as well as how to solve common technical (and cultural) problems.

Bring a laptop as you’ll be provisioned with a private sandbox VM where you’ll set up your own end to end DevOps pipeline. While Git, TeamCity and Octopus deploy will be provided on your VM, attendees can use their own GitHub/VSTS subscriptions if they prefer.

What you will learn

The course agenda is as follows:

Day 1

  • Introduction to Database DevOps/Database Lifecycle Management (DLM)
  • Connecting a database to version control (with Redgate SQL Source Control)
  • Branching (and merging!) databases
  • Handling migrations when auto-generated scripts don’t work
  • Production drift monitoring and alerting with DDL triggers or DLM Dashboard

Day 2

  • Building databases with PowerShell and Redgate DLM Automation
  • Connecting a build server to version control and automating builds
  • Continuous deployment to a shared integration database for testing
  • Introduction to unit testing with tSQLt
  • Integrating your CI builds with DLM Dashboard to verify all production versions have been through CI

Day 3

  • How to automate production deployments (while keeping DBAs happy)
  • Managing deployments with PowerShell, NuGet and Redgate DLM Automation
  • Connecting a Release Management server to your build server and setting up one-click database deployments
  • Dry-run deployments and staging environments
  • Manual review processes, the dos and don’ts

Key benefits

You’ll understand how to manage database changes throughout their lifecycle, which will help you deliver more frequently and more reliably. You’ll also understand how to work much more effectively with other teams at your organisation.

Deployment failures will happen far less often – and you’ll be able to deal with them more easily when they do happen.

Cost: £895 (to March 31 2017) £995 (from April 1st 2017) +VAT

Alex started his IT career at Redgate where, as a pre-sales engineer, he helped clients like Barclays, Farm Credit Services of America and Skyscanner to improve their database delivery processes. Skyscanner now proudly claim that they can release 95 times per day. Alex was also part of the team that developed DLM Dashboard and DLM Automation.
In 2016 Alex started DLM Consultants, a consulting and training company based in the UK, whose mission is that their client’s databases will not be their bottleneck on delivering customer value. DLM Consultants deliver several online training courses per month and have worked on site with clients in the UK, Europe and the US.
A keen community activist, Alex also helps to organise free user groups and conferences including the London Continuous Delivery Meetup and annual SQL Relay conference roadshow. He’s also a regular speaker, having delivered over 50 sessions across three continents in the last two years and he blogs at
